Bison bounce back with 87-80 win over Mustangs

WASHINGTON – In a hotly contested, physical North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) matchup between the top team in the North Division and the second best team in the South Division it was the host Gallaudet University that emerged victorious 87-80 here Monday night at the Field House. Gallaudet (11-6, 8-3 NEAC) knocked Morrisville State College (12-7, 8-3 NEAC) down a spot in the North Division standings and ended its three-game win streak with tonight's loss.

The game was close throughout as the deficit remained in single digits except for a few seconds in the second half. The Mustangs used a 9-1 run, thanks to three 3-pointers, midway through the second half to knot the game at 61 with 8:32 left in regulation.

GU answered with a 14-3 run over the course of four minutes to regain control and hold on for its 11th win of the season.

Senior guard Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.) scored 17 of his team-high 26 points in the second half as he made 8 of 9 free throws. He finished the game with four assists, three rebounds and three steals as he made two 3-pointers and shot 8 of 15 from the field.

Junior guard Raymond Nelson (Riverside, Calif.) scored 20 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals in the win. Fellow junior Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.) was limited to 17 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in 22 minutes played. Senior forward Brandon Holsworth (Beal City, Mich.) recorded his first double-double with 10 points and a career best 11 rebounds.

Morrisville State jumped out to a quick 12-3 lead just three minutes into the game and held its last lead minutes later before Gallaudet took the lead at the 13:16 mark on a Holsworth 3-pointer. The Bison took a 42-40 lead into halftime.

Morrisville senior forward Ibrahima Toure led the team with a game-high 29 points and 14 rebounds to record the double-double. which Junior guard Qwuhail Barlow and sophomore guard Trent Ward added 14 and 12 points, respectively.

  • McGriff had three or more blocks for the third consecutive game
  • Neither team made a field goal in the final two minutes of play
  • The Bison outscored the Mustangs, 44-32, inside the paint
  • After Morrisville St. shot 6 of 13 from 3-point range in the first half, Gallaudet held them to 4 of 19 in the second half
  • The Bison converted 81.8 percent (18 of 22) from the free throw line in the second half, a season-high in a half with at least 15 free throw attempts
  • Today was the first time that Gallaudet defeated Morrisville State on its home court since Jan. 15, 2011
  • Gordon was honored prior to the game with a few congratulatory words and a game ball given by head coach Kevin Kovacs for becoming the 23rd member of GU's men's basketball 1,000-point club

The Bison will travel to New York this weekend for two NEAC games against the North Division. GU begins the trip at Keuka College (6-10, 3-7 NEAC) on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 1 p.m.
