Bison home opener spoiled by Knights

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's soccer team played to a 3-3 draw with Berkeley College (N.J.) here Saturday at Hotchkiss Field as the two squads played through two scoreless overtime periods.

GU (0-2-1) held a 3-1 lead with five minutes left in regulation before the visiting Knights (3-0-1) rallied to score twice to force the extra frames and spoil the Bison home opener.

The Bison scored two early goals in the first half as freshman Donald Ognane (Libreville, Gabon) scored his first collegiate goal in the 16th minute off an assist from sophomore Brian Espanto (San Antonio, Texas).

Gallaudet found the back of the next, eight minutes later, off a Knight foul which led to several quick passes from junior Sean O'Callaghan (San Diego, Calif.) up to senior Elan Markel (University Park, Md.), who then sent a cross towards the Knight goal. A streaking Raymond Mukhailov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) crashed the net and headed the ball just inside the left post for his second goal this season.

The Bison were set to take a 2-0 lead into the half but Berkeley had other plans.

Erick Carabantes and Dylan Jurado did a give-and-go down the far side of the field before Carabantes buried a shot past Gallaudet goalie Shane Angel (Mechanicsville, Md.) with 10 seconds left in the first half. Instead of a two-goal cushion the Bison held a 2-1 lead at intermission.

GU added to its lead in the 60th minute of the second half when freshman Amjad Al-Siyabi (Muscat, Oman) booted a long pass into the offensive zone where a streaking Dylan Christoffels (Methuen, Mass.) corralled the ball and got past Knight goalie Robert Parker (three saves) and scored an empty net goal.

Things unraveled in the closing minutes as the Knights scored twice in a window of three minutes and 47 seconds. Berkeley's Marcos Midalgo assisted both goals as he found Anderson Amador in the 85th minute and Chase Rand in the 88th minute to knot the game at 3-3.
