Parade magazine feature on Gallaudet University's women's basketball season

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Though the Gallaudet University women's basketball season ended two weeks ago in the 2011 NCAA tournament the Bison journey through this season will be told once more in Parade magazine this Sunday. Parade, based out of New York City, is a national publication that is inserted in most Sunday newspapers across the country and some weekly community publications. In total, approximately 32 million copies of Parade are expected to reach a readership of about 74 million people nationwide.

Gallaudet began the season with a 20-game win streak, its longest in program history, including a victory over nationally ranked Lebanon Valley College. Their success led to a national ranking where the Bison remained for over a month. GU finished the regular-season with a 20-2 record in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) where the Bison were co-champions with Keuka College. GU was selected as one of 20 at-large teams for this year's NCAA tournament, marking the program's third appearance, where they now sport a 2-3 record all-time. Coach Kevin Cook was selected as NEAC Coach of the Year, senior Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.) took home NEAC Player of the Year and first team all-conference honors while fellow senior Nukeitra Hayes (Anderson, Ind.) was named to the All-NEAC second team.

Below is a short preview of the two-page article written by Nina Burleigh who attended the final two home games of Gallaudet's regular-season at the Field House.

"When Kevin Cook landed in Washington, D.C., to coach the Gallaudet University's Bison women's basketball team in October 2007, he braced for the challenge of his career. Even though he had an impressive resume, he had never worked with athletes quite like these. The students at Gallaudet are deaf or hard of hearing, and Cook didn't know even a letter of sign language when he took the job.  The road was long and shaky, but this year, the Bison's finished the regular season with a 23-2 record and were the top seed in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament."
