Freshmen net three goals for Bison against St. Joseph's (Brooklyn)

Payton DeGraw celebrates after she scores a women's soccer goal for the Gallaudet Bison. She raises her right arm in the air in celebration. Go Bison!

WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University found the back of the net three times, in a span of 17 minutes, in the second half of Sunday's women's soccer game against St. Joseph's College Brooklyn. The three tallies, recorded by Bison freshmen, were not enough against the high-powered Bears offense that doubled up GU, 6-3, this afternoon at Hotchkiss Field.

Gallaudet (0-2) trailed 2-0 at the half and the Bison were down three goals in the second half before freshman forward Payton DeGraw (Salt Lake City, Utah) scored her first collegiate goal on a fast break, off an assist from sophomore midfielder Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.). DeGraw's goal cut the Bears lead to two, 3-1.

A minute later, St. Joseph's (1-0) responded with another goal as Deserae Sequeira completed a hat trick in the 63rd minute.

The two teams continued to trade goals the rest of the way.

Gallaudet junior midfielder Isabelle Troup (Snellville, Ga.) sent a shot off the right post in the 68th minute, as the ball deflected right to DeGraw's foot on the goal doorstep and into the open net.

Sequeira scored her fourth goal past Gallaudet senior goalie Silvya Levesque (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), 47 seconds later, as the Bears forward made a move and was left with a wide-open goal.

GU found the back of the net one more time when Neild made a shot on the Bears' goal where goalie Reem Shaban made one of her eight saves but couldn't control the loose rebound. Bison freshman forward Courtney Gentzke (Honeoye, N.Y.) crashed the net and scored her first collegiate goal as GU trailed 5-3 with 12 minutes to play.

St. Joseph's tacked on an insurance goal in the 85th minute after Sequeira made two back-to-back shots before her teammate Clara Curtiss booted home a hard shot into the Bison goal.

  • Levesque finished the game with a season best 10 saves
  • Gallaudet had one team save as senior defender Cyndie Rieder (Benicia, Calif.) made a clutch stop
  • Shaban made eight saves in net for the Bears
  • SJC outshot GU 30-19
  • The Bison had 13 second-half shots
  • The Bears took five corner kicks while GU had three

Gallaudet will hit the road for the first time this season when it travels to College of Saint Elizabeth (0-1) on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m.
