Women's volleyball picks up first win of season at Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team earned its first win of the season here Saturday on the second day of the Battlefield Classic hosted by Gettysburg College. The Bison went 1-3 during the two-day tournament.

Gallaudet (1-3) defeated Marywood University, 3-1, as the Bison won the first two sets by the same 25-18 score. Marywood responded with a 25-21 set win before GU closed the match out with a 25-23 set win. Three different Bison had 10 or more kills in the win.

The Bison started Saturday morning going up against the host Bullets of Gettysburg. GU started strong by taking the first set 27-25. The Bullets stormed back to win the final three sets; 25-15, 25-12, 25-17. Junior Jasmine Jeter (Noblesville, Ind.) posted a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs.

GU started the weekend on Friday evening going up against two tough in-region foes. Carnegie Mellon University and McDaniel College swept the Bison in straight sets.

In the loss against Carnegie Mellon, junior Darriyan Thomas (Vallejo, Calif.) and freshman Adele Daniels (Frederick, Md.) led the team with seven kills. On the defensive side, sophomore libero Raelyn Fuechtmann (South St. Paul, Minn.) led the team with 11 digs.


  • Thomas tallied 49 digs and 42 kills in four matches
  • She averaged 3.00 kills per set in 14 sets played
  • Fuechtmann led the defense with 77 digs
  • Six Bison had three or more service aces in four matches
  • Daniels recorded six blocks in four matches
  • GU had 13 services aces during the weekend

The Bison make the short trip to Arlington, Va., on Wednesday, Sept. 7, to face to Marymount (Va.) University in a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
