FREDERICK, Md. - Gallaudet University women's volleyball made the short trek up to to Frederick, Md., on Thursday night to face Hood College in a non-conference match in the BB&T Arena. The Bison won the first set but dropped two close sets before bouncing back to take the fourth and fifth sets to win, 3-2.
Gallaudet (8-20) rolled in the first set with a 25-11 win as the Bison recorded 18 kills.
Hood (1-23) rallied with two straight set wins by the same identical 24-26 score. In the second set, GU led 24-23 and had the serve but Hood scored three straight points to knot the match at 1-1. In the third set, Gallaudet was up 23-20 down the stretch before Hood scored six of the next seven points.
GU jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the fourth set before the Blazers scored six straight to take a 9-10 lead. The team went back-and-forth before GU went up five, 19-14, and later 23-18. Hood, once more, battled back and scored five straight points to tie the set at 23. Luckily for the Bison they scored the next two points to win 25-23 and avoided the loss. Two Frederick, Md., natives in junior Karita Lewis and freshman Cassidy Perry recorded kills to win the fourth set.
Hood took a 7-2 lead in the fifth set before Gallaudet battled back to tie the set at 8-8. It was close the rest of the way. The Blazers had an 9-11 lead before GU scored two straight and the set remained within a point until the end where the Bison came out on top, 15-13.
Lewis recorded a career-high 25 kills to go with 16 digs to record her 11th double-double this season. She added four aces and one block assist. Four Bison finished with double-figure kill totals. Freshman Sunita Schmidjorg (Austin, Texas) tallied 12 kills, 10 digs and two aces while Perry and freshman Malia Zornoza (Pleasanton, Calif.) had 10 kills each. Freshman Demi Bingham (Jefferson, Md.) passed out 56 assists and made 18 digs while sophomore Mia Upchurch (Austin, Texas) recorded 30 digs.
Hood was led by Carrington Ray's 12 kills while Ashley Williams passed out 16 assists and Fabiola Melendez-Rivera made 33 digs and four aces. The Blazers have dropped six consecutive matches.

Gallaudet will travel up to New York this weekend to take on Keuka College and Wells College in two North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) games. The Bison (4-2 NEAC) will go up against Wells (7-17, 4-2 NEAC) at 11 a.m. followed by a match against the host Wolves of Keuka (5-14, 2-4 NEAC) at 1 p.m.
