ABINGTON, Pa. - The Gallaudet University women's volleyball season came to a close here Tuesday night in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) tournament quarterfinal round as the Bison lost in straight sets to Penn St.-Abington. The No. 3 seed Nittany Lions won 25-22, 26-24, 25-21.
It was a long season for Gallaudet (11-24), who lost two all-conference players at the start of the season, as many new players were asked to fill the void. This is the first time Gallaudet has not reached the NEAC women's volleyball tournament semifinal round since it joined the conference in 2010-11. GU won six straight NEAC championships from 2010-16. The Bison post their first losing season under the direction of Head Coach Lynn Ray Boren, who completed his 15th season.
The No. 6 seed Bison dropped the first set as they led 10-7 early on and later held a slim 21-20 lead before the host Nittany Lions scored five of the last six points. In the second set, GU held a 21-18 lead and was one point away, up 24-23, from winning before Penn St.-Abington scored three straight points to win the set. It was another close set in the third set but Gallaudet was only able to tie the set at 18-18 before Penn St.-Abington pulled away down the stretch.
Penn St.-Abington (17-15) advances to this weekend's NEAC semifinal and will go up against No. 2 seed Penn St.-Harrisburg (15-3) on Saturday, Nov. 9. Top-seed Morrisville St. (21-7) will go up against No. 5 seed Penn St.-Berks (16-14), who defeated No. 4 Lancaster Bible College (16-16) in five sets, 3-2, in the other NEAC quarterfinal on Tuesday night.
Junior outside hitter Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) led the way with 14 kills and 10 digs for a double-double. Freshman setter Demi Bingham (Jefferson, Md.) passed out 37 assists while sophomore Mia Upchurch (Austin, Texas) made 12 digs.
