Bison women finish fifth at Cardinal Classic

COLMAR MANOR, Md. - The Gallaudet University women's cross country team placed fifth at the Cardinal Classic hosted by the Catholic University of America here Saturday morning at Colmar Manor Community Park.

University of Mary Washington won the meet with 33 points as the Eagles' top five runners finished in the top 12 spots. Catholic took second place with 47 points followed by Moravian College (77), Juniata College (79) and Gallaudet (155). Juniata senior Azia Kalil won the 6K race, which featured 62 runners, with a time of 24 minutes and 33 seconds.

Junior Taylor Nguyen (Ballwin, Mo.) was Gallaudet's top finisher as she finished in 54th place with a time of 32:29.8, just under eight minutes off the first-place pace set by Kalil. Senior Fatuma Ali (Tucson, Ariz.) gutted out a strong performance on the humid and overcast day and placed 55th overall (35:05.3). Freshman Jenny Mendis (Brook Park, Ohio) was the third Bison to cross the finish line as she placed 57th (37:46.1). Freshmen Mariana Arroyo Chavez (Mexico City, Mexico) and Daniella Reyna (Uvalde, Texas) were the next two Bison to finish in 58th (42:21.3) and 59th place (43:11.5), respectively, to complete GU's team scoring.

Freshman Aleena Nicoloro (Redding, Calif.) was 60th (43:54.8) followed by fellow freshmen Cassidy Lebaron (Mesa, Ariz.) and Alexys Santiago (Hatboro, Pa.) in 61st (46:34.2) and 62nd (49:51.7), respectively.

Gallaudet is off next weekend before the Bison run at the Hornet Harrier hosted by Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va., at the Kernstown Battlefield on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m.
