Gallaudet wraps up opening weekend at Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team completed the second day of the Battlefield Classic hosted by Gettysburg College here Saturday with two hard fought matches against stiff competition. GU started the day with a 3-0 loss (19-25, 22-25, 21-25) to Dickinson College followed by a 3-1 loss (27-25, 18-25, 14-25, 18-25) to Rowan University.

Gallaudet completed the two-day tournament with a 1-3 record as the Bison went up the toughest teams possible in the tournament. Freshman opposite Emily Wright (Auburn, Calif.) was named to the all-tournament team after a weekend where Wright tallied 43 kills and seven blocks.

In the opening match on Saturday, a trio of Bison recorded nine kills each led by Wright, senior outside hitter Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) and senior opposite Elina Rubinshteyn (Austin, Texas). Sophomore setter Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) passed out 30 assists while junior libero Mia Upchurch (Austin, Texas) led the team with 15 digs and four service aces.

In the second match against Rowan, Wright led the way with 11 kills followed by freshman middle hitter Anya Pothorski (Indianapolis, Ind.) made a career best eight kills. Upchurch made 27 digs while Giuntoli passed out 18 assists and freshman setter Alyssa Glennon (Buda, Texas) recorded 17 assists.


  • Giuntoli finished the tournament with 119 assists in four matches
  • Upchurch tallied 73 digs during the weekend 
  • Lewis recorded 45 kills in four matches

Gallaudet will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 10, at the Buttermaker Tournament at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. The Bison will play four matches in two days starting against Cedar Crest College at 5 p.m.
